The butterfly knife, is a folding pocket knife that has two handles counter-rotating around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. It's design resembles the motion of the desert butterfly, the Swallowtail's, wings. Additionally, the tang imitates the butterfly's former temporary cocoon dwelling, keeping the blades safe as does the silk for the caterpillar. The utilitarian structure of the knife brings together it's potentially sinister aspect with the vulnerable quality of it's natural model.
